The series finale of What Not to Wear this month reminded me that I’d never posted the interview I did with co-host Stacy London this summer. Here’s how our conversation began:

Me: Stacy, I’ve watched your show for years, and never knew you had psoriasis.

Stacy: Well, you obviously didn’t read my book, then—BUSTED!

Yikes, never a good start! (Luckily, she was teasing.) In truth, WNTW used to be a fixture of my Friday nights. So I enjoyed learning how Stacy’s lifelong battle with psoriasis actually inspired her career in fashion and gave her a point of connection with many of WNTW’s subjects over the years.

SunWipePads300dpiI used to dread the June issues of my women’s magazines because they always featured skin cancer scare stories—and I’m appallingly lazy about sun protection. I’m not alone: Only 17 percent of Americans say they always wear sunscreen. We ALL need to do better. Check out my reviews of some new sun protection products that will bust even your best excuses for skipping SPF.

We’re usually all about the ladies over at Spry, but for some reason I’ve done stories on quite a few dudes recently. First there was legendary QB Joe Montana (who joins the small but growing club of people both my dad and I have interviewed). Then I chatted with Paula Deen’s sons Bobby and Jamie, whose voices sound exactly the same. (Shoutout to Spry’s intern, who bravely transcribed for me.) Healthy chef Art Smith revealed the meal he’s made for both Oprah and Obama in our interview. And finally, just days after I started binge-watching Arrested Development’s new Netflix season, I got the chance to talk to Henry Winkler, an absolute sweetheart of a man.

Weight-loss stories are a Spry staple, but we work really hard to strike a balance between giving people what they want (quick tips) and providing solid expert advice—which often is not what we want to hear (slow and steady wins the race). I hope you can see that approach in this crop of weight-loss stories I’ve done over the spring and summer. There are suggestions for boosting your metabolism, surviving a sugar detox and doing the Atkins diet the right way.

relishI love our Most Valuable Motivator series because it allows a glimpse into health gurus’  day-to-day lives. What shortcuts do they take to maintain their healthy habits during a busy week? What do they eat on a regular basis? How do they psych themselves up on lazy days? Check out my interviews with Ellie Krieger (one of my mom’s favorites!) and Daphne Oz for some great practical tips.

51AeFPpU2+L._BO2,204,203,200_PIsitb-sticker-arrow-click,TopRight,35,-76_AA300_SH20_OU01_Sure we all love to hate Gwyneth Paltrow—and other celebs who try to peddle their strange diet and lifestyle advice.  (Cupping, anyone?) But one thing I’ve learned from reading many of these books on the job is that there’s often really good advice within their pages, too. Check out my round-up of the latest celebrity books as well as some surprisingly smart things Gwynnie has said about her health.

Gelish Midnight Caller

Gelish Midnight Caller

Since my original review of at-home gel manicure kits remains pretty popular on our site (#humblebrag), I decided to follow it up with a second round of reviews. These kits are just getting better—and cheaper. And as many of the newer incarnations sell the pieces a la carte, smart consumers can mix and match. Here’s a bonus rec for blog readers: If I had to start from scratch, I’d pick up the Kiss LED lamp at the drugstore (using coupons or  reward dollars), then pop over to Sally Beauty Supply for the Gelish base and top coats and polish. (Amazon also has great prices on many brands of gel polish.)

Coach K q&a

25Mar13

Duke’s Coach K may be the winningest coach in NCAA Division I men’s basketball history, but in our early morning (pre-practice) interview, he was just a regular, salt-of-the-earth guy. We talked about his healthy habits, the accomplishment he’s most proud of—and one major regret.

book-diet-2012-best-advice-health-spry1Someday you won’t be able to find me in my cubicle—I’ll be buried under stacks of diet books. It’s all for you, my dear readers. Here are the best tips from the latest crop.

This time next year, the veggie we’ll all be burned out on is … cauliflower! Well, my sources say it’s the new kale, anyway. Read my round-up to find out what other nutrition trends you can expect to catch on in 2013.
